St Joseph's Catholic Primary School

Pink Group

At St Joseph's, we are proud to use Read Write Inc as our systematic phonics and early reading programme. Developed by Ruth Miskin, RWI provides a structured and engaging approach that helps children learn to read accurately and fluently while developing a love of reading from an early age.

Through daily lessons, pupils are taught to recognise sounds, blend them into words, and build confidence in both reading and writing. The programme supports every child at their own pace, ensuring that no one is left behind and that all children experience success.

By using Read Write Inc., we aim to give our pupils the strongest possible foundation in literacy, setting them up for future learning and a lifelong enjoyment of books.

In Pink Group...

Children in the Read Write Inc Pink Group are building on the skills they developed in the earlier stages of phonics and beginning to read with greater confidence and fluency.

At this stage, pupils practise blending and reading words that include set 2 and 3 sounds, helping them to recognise more complex spelling patterns and read new words more quickly. They begin to read short storybooks with greater independence, focusing on accuracy, fluency, and expression. Children also discuss what they have read, developing their comprehension skills and understanding of new vocabulary.

By the end of the Pink Group, children are becoming more independent and enthusiastic readers and writers, ready to progress to the next stage of the Read Write Inc. programme.

In Pink Group, the children are currently building their confidence in recognising, reading and using the set 2 and 3 sounds.
